This is an exciting opportunity to be an ambassador and champion for people with learning disabilities who live and work in North Lincolnshire.
The professional co-chair will also work with our two newly elected self advocate co-chairs to jointly lead the work of the partnership board.
The role of the Partnership Board is to: ‘give local people and the people that support them, a way of influencing strategic direction and service development and to ensure that local services reflect local need’.
The Learning Disability Partnership Board does not have formal decision making responsibilities for services. It does help to shape and influence the health and wellbeing agenda in the local area, particularly in relation to people with learning disabilities. It ensures that local commissioning plans in relation to learning disability services are in place and that they meet the needs of local people.
The Learning Disability Partnership Board is accountable to the Adults Partnership and the Health and Wellbeing Board. The partnership board is represented on both strategic forums via agreed elected lay members.
The successful candidate will have access to training, be able to gain new knowledge and have the chance to contribute to improving services for people with learning disabilities across North Lincolnshire.

Traditionally VANL has been an accredited Volunteer Centre with staff employed and trained to broker volunteering opportunity and manage placements. As we outlined earlier in the year, our funding has been withdrawn for this service, although we maintain our accreditation and we remain the local experts on Volunteering. We still receive many enquiries about volunteering and, despite cuts, there are increasing numbers of referrals from statutory agencies who recognise the value of volunteering.
This post will not rehearse the benefits of volunteering. Instead we will simply acknowledge that volunteering has huge benefits to individuals – developing skills, enhanced wellbeing, socialisation amongst them – along with huge benefits to the community – increasingly so, as more and more essential services are being devolved to community and voluntary sector organisations, such as befriending support, listening and counselling services, grief services such Cruse Bereavement Support, or luncheon clubs, or even hospices such as our own Lindsey Lodge Hospice who rely on volunteers to deliver essential services.
For VANL this withdrawal of funding has posed some challenges. Increased demand means we have had to adapt and through consultation over the year we have developed a new way of delivering Volunteer Support to the Sector in North Lincolnshire.
Firstly we are making use of technology. Most organisations and individuals are using the internet to function and so we are now advertising volunteer opportunities on our website. Please get in touch with us and let us know what volunteers you are looking for and we will advertise. There may be a small charge for non-members, but membership costs just £10 for the year and there are many other discounts and services available too. Have a look at the benefits of Membership here.
Secondly we have two facebook pages – our existing page Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire which promotes our activities and issues pertinent to the Sector but pertinently our newer page Volunteering in North Lincolnshire. Please like and share this. This is uniquely for sharing volunteering opportunities and news. Please populate it and share it.

This is currently the national site for sharing vacancies, is searchable and at time of going to print over 130 vacancies for volunteers are listed for in our area.
Another way in which we can support is through our Employability programmes. We have several programmes focussed on developing Skills and CV building for individuals in tailored programmes. Volunteering can be a core part of this and our project workers will ensure positive experiences with support for both the volunteer and the organisation.
Lastly, whilst we cannot provide all services for free, we are delighted that many employers are offering staff the positive benefits of employer-supported volunteering. To find out anything at all about charities, type in Charity Commission into a search engine, then select the GOV.UK website. The address is actually https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission, but this may change and in any case it’s difficult to remember such a long address.

HOW DO WE SET UP A NEW CHARITABLE ORGANISATION?
To set up a new charity: click on “Set up and register a charity”. Read the relevant pages, then follow instructions. A charity can only be registered if:
If you are a brand new group you probably can’t register immediately, but that doesn’t stop you raising funds through fundraising events, by inviting donations, through crowd funding or through grant applications – there are a few places which don’t need you to be a registered charity, such as Awards for All (Big Lottery), or local councils. Once you’ve learned the process through those applications, you may have enough to register as a charity and move on to larger projects.
HOW DO WE MAKE ANNUAL RETURNS ONLINE?
A charity needs to make annual returns to a range of organisations: HMRC (which your accounts advisor will tell you about), Companies House if you are also a registered company, and the Charity Commission. If you do not make these returns each year, HMRC will take action, Companies House will fine you, and the Charity Commission will cease your registration as a charity and may mount an investigation.
Your charity must submit an annual return if its income is over £10,000.
If your charity’s income is under £10,000, you must still keep your registered details up to date, eg income, expenditure, trustees and contact details.
It is not difficult to make the report online. To send your charity’s annual return to the Charity Commission, click on that option in the list on the front page. Read all the instructions before you begin. Make sure you have your Annual Report (which you should have prepared for your Annual General Meeting to report back to your members) and your Annual Accounts in electronic form – you will need to submit the accounts as a pdf which you upload to the website.
WHAT NEEDS DOING WHEN WE MAKE CHANGES IN OUR CHARITY?
If you appoint a new trustee, or if the main contact changes you MUST tell the Charity Commission about it. It is important to keep your information up to date, because they can’t send you information or demands for reports if they don’t have your correct contact details.
There is lots of information on the Charity Commission website – advice for trustees, alerts and consultations, reports on investigations, publications and advice for the general public.
Do use this resource – there is no funding available now for organisations like Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire to provide advice, so the Charity Commission is your primary source of advice. They also are short of funding to pay for staff, so their service is all online. This has the advantage that you can consult them at any time of day or night, and you can keep going back until you find the answer you need. VANL will still be able to advise, but the service may be charged for.

The Laser Emporium is a pilot employability project based around the needs of supporting people with Mental Health problems.
Experience tells us that many companies are looking to offer their support to small charities but often aren’t sure where to start: funnily enough we have lots of ideas how they can! From letting us make use of their old packaging boxes to donating pots of unwanted paint, there are many ways larger organisations could give us some much needed support!
All of your hard work will directly benefit the charity and people in your local community, you can’t get much more job satisfaction than that eh?!

This is an exciting volunteering opportunity within The Laser Emporium. Based on Robert Street Scunthorpe but selling online across the country, we create bespoke personalised gifts using a combination of vector images, wood and a professional laser machine.
The Laser Emporium is a pilot employability project based around the needs of supporting people with Mental Health problems. To allow us more time to adequately do this and to move the business forward, we would love to welcome someone creative with basic graphic design knowledge/ability to undertake a placement with us to help us create new product ranges and unique designs – particularly Christmas items and gifts!
We are looking for someone who is able to make our design ideas a reality and perhaps bring some of your own creative ideas along too!
We currently use Inkscape to create our designs so experience of this would be a bonus however we are sure anyone with a design background would pick this up no problem.
