2003 – new technologies and innovation

2003 saw major changes in leadership across the world, as well as new technologies being harnessed.

  • The last successful communication was received with the NASA space probe, Pioneer 10
  • The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry with the loss of all 7 astronauts on board
  • Troops captured Baghdad signalling the end of Saddam Hussein’s regime, which crumbled 2 days later
  • An earthquake in Northern Algeria killed 2000 people
  • Finding Nemo was released in cinemas
  • Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Manchester United

New technologies were being used here too:

  • First VANL and project websites were created
  • The first template Child Protection Policy was developed, suitable for any group in North Lincolnshire to adapt for their needs
  • The Millennium Volunteers project developed greatly and was extended to more 16-25 year olds
  • A number of Volunteering Fairs were held in different locations
  • An environmental Action Plan was launched
