Karl Wilding, who will be speaking at the VANL Birthday Celebrations, is a well-known speaker about all matters voluntary. We asked him to tell us a little about himself.

‘My work at NCVO is to champion the voluntary sector and volunteering. We believe that voluntary organisations and the volunteers they and others engage make a positive difference to the world – and we want to support them to make an even bigger difference.

As NCVO’s director of public policy & volunteering I lead a group of talented, committed people that create robust, innovative, policy and research, advice and support, and campaigns for the long term. We work across sectors, supporting both voluntary organisations and volunteering, wherever it takes place.

With a mix of policy and research analysts, communicators and campaigners and practical advisors. we aim to provide NCVO and our stakeholders with the best quality evidence and solutions for effective policy, practice and campaigns. We aim to get voluntary organisations and volunteering taken seriously.

I speak and write widely on the big issues facing the voluntary sector, such as transparency and accountability, funding and finance, and the relationship between digital technology and social action. I’m an active contributor to NCVO’s foresight programme which aims to identify up-and-coming issues that will shape the voluntary sector. I also blog about the big issues facing voluntary organisations and regularly share voluntary sector news and insight via Twitter.

Outside of NCVO, I am an non-executive director of Charity Bank, a trustee of a US voluntary organisation, Creating the Future, a trustee of St Albans Centre for Voluntary Service, and an Honorary Visiting Fellow at Cass Business School’s Centre for Charity Effectiveness. Previously I was vice-chair of the Charities Evaluation Services and a trustee of the Association of Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector.
