Youth Shelters
6 Steps to a community shelter
- Build the case
- Location
- Design
- Consultation
- Ownership
- Support
Build the Case
- What's the "problem" (is it a problem or an unmet need?)
- What's the solution (how could this need be met?)
- How do we pay for it?
- Who should work together to achieve this?
Location
- This should be accessible and visable
- People need to feel safe, so consider placing near other resources e.g play area, MUGA etc
- Lighting and bins need to be provided and serviced
- Planning consent needs to be checked
Design
- Consider shelter surveillance and safety
- Materials...durable....recyclable
Consultation
- Who are the local people that you need to consult with and why?
- Councils, all residents, police, youth services, anyone who has an interest in the community
Ownership
- Who will take ownership of it?
- Who will insure it?
- Community benefit?
- Maintenance
- Parents/grandparents/children and young people used by all at various times
Co-ordinating the project
- Partnership approach
- Use young peoples energy and enthusiasm with older peoples experience and expertise
- Communicate at all levels
- Work together to achieve a thriving community....share the load
